Colin Kaepernick’s Girlfriend Shares Thoughts on 7-Year Anniversary of His First Kneel During National Anthem
About seven years ago, there was a big story about Colin Kaepernick. He decided not to stand up during the national anthem before a game. This was just the beginning of his peaceful way of showing his beliefs.
Kaepernick kept kneeling during the national anthem all through the 2016 season. He was doing this to protest against police treating Black people unfairly. His girlfriend, Nessa, wrote a long message on Instagram about this important moment in his life.
She said on Instagram, “Seven years ago this day, history witnessed a defining moment when Colin began protesting systemic racism specifically police terrorism against Black people. This simple, yet symbolic bold act helped spread a nation-wide and global conversation about racial injustice and police brutality. Despite backlash, criticism and loss of employment with the league, he stood on his commitment to shedding light on the need for significant change.”
“Colin stands on the shoulders of Black freedom fighters throughout history including Paul Robeson, Muhammad Ali, and Angela Davis who made significant sacrifices to ensure Black and Brown communities worldwide can work toward a life without the burden of systemic oppression.”

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season. But he still wants to get back into the game. He told Gilberto Manzano from Sports Illustrated, “I’m going to keep pushing. I’m going to keep fighting for it because I know I can step on the field and play. Every workout, every opportunity I’ve had to show that, the feedback has always been positive. Everything from, ‘He’s still an elite player,’ to ‘The workout was great; it was better than expected.’”
