Chrono Cross Remastered to Preserve Playability of Classic JRPG

Chrono Cross, the classic Japanese RPG, has been remastered by Square Enix in a new edition called Radical Dreamers. The remastering project was launched as the developers feared that the original game was becoming “unplayable” due to changes in technology. In a recent interview with the developers, it was revealed that the Radical Dreamers Edition began as a way to commemorate the game’s 20th anniversary, but ended up being released in 2022, on the 23rd anniversary.

The backstory of the Remastering Project

Remaster producer Koichiro Sakamoto explained that the Game Archive service on PlayStation 3 allowed players to play PlayStation 1 games, but with PlayStation 4 already on the market, it was unclear if there would be a similar service. Sakamoto feared that Chrono Cross could become unplayable, and so the remastering project was set up.

Radical Dreamers

The Radical Dreamers Edition features some questionable performance and visual issues, but recent patches have improved these problems. Radical Dreamers, the text-based spin-off, had never been released in English and was becoming rare in Japan. Original director Masato Kato was initially hesitant to include Radical Dreamers in the Chrono series re-releases, as it was not fully finished, but decided to include it due to its high demand and premium price in the market.

The Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition is a welcome preservation effort for a classic game that was in danger of becoming unplayable due to technological changes. The inclusion of Radical Dreamers in the remastered edition is a treat for fans of the series, and the improvements made to the game through patches have enhanced the playing experience. Overall, the remastered edition is a celebration of a beloved game that will now be accessible to a new generation of players.
