Cash-Conscious Rams Look To Free Agency For Reinforcements
Los Angeles Rams Look to Rebuild for 2023 Season.
The Los Angeles Rams (5-12) are looking to bounce back in 2023, with quarterback Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay returning for another season. However, the Rams need more cap room for a major move in free agency, and the Stafford trade with the Detroit Lions left them without a first-round pick.
Despite this, the Rams are determined to rebuild their team and return to relevancy. To do this, they must cut and restructure players so they can add talent. Given McVay’s flirting with TV and Stafford’s age (34), the Rams could look for short-term additions while trying to make a last run.
With 25 free agents of their own, including quarterback Baker Mayfield, the Rams will be shopping in the bargain-basement bin. However, there are a few key positions that the Rams will need to address in order to rebuild their team.
Running Back
Rashaad Penny, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, could be a buy-low candidate for the Rams. Cam Akers left the Rams for personal reasons in the middle of the season amid a rumoured trade request. He returned, but in 2023, Los Angeles might search for a fresh runner and much more stability at the position. In 2022, Penny suffered a lower leg fracture and missed most of the season, which could make him a great option for the Rams.
Offensive Tackle
Riley Reiff, offensive tackle for the Chicago Bears, could add stability to the Rams’ line. Stafford missed nearly half of the season due to injury, so keeping him safe will be a top priority. Reiff knows Stafford from his days in Detroit and could be a great addition to the team. He was injured in 2022, so Reiff shouldn’t cost much and could be a great addition to the team.
Cornerback
Rock Ya-Sin, cornerback for the Las Vegas Raiders, could be a veteran presence for the Rams. The Rams could move on from cornerback Jalen Ramsey, which would open a starting spot in the secondary. Ya-Sin played more than 600 snaps in 2022 for the Raiders and could be a great stop-gap until the Rams can find a long-term replacement for Ramsey.
Overall, the Rams have a lot of work to do in order to rebuild their team. However, with the right moves in free agency and the right approach, they could return to relevancy in 2023. The key will be to address their positional needs and build a team that can compete in the highly competitive NFC West.
The free agency period begins on March 15 at 4 p.m. ET.
