Carlos Alcaraz vs. Novak Djokovic: World No. 1 scenario following the injury issue of the Spaniard

Novak Djokovic completed his North American hardcourt tour by not only winning the US Open but also dethroning Carlos Alcaraz to recover the World No. 1 status.

Alcaraz’s total ranking points dropped back to the four figures when he failed to defend the 2,000 ranking points he had earned on his way to victory in New York last year.

While Djokovic soared to a seemingly impossible 11,045, the young Spaniard remained optimistic about coming up. In various interviews since the US Open, he has shown a desire to retake the top rank, stating that he was relishing the struggle for it:

“As I said a few times, we have a really beautiful battle for the No. 1 spot after the great performance Novak Djokovic had in the American season,” Alcaraz remarked. “Right now, he’s the World No. 1.” I’m going here with extra determination to try to reclaim it in the Race and, of course, in the rankings.”

Alcaraz had entered two events in China, the China Open and the Shanghai Masters, with that incentive in mind. With Djokovic missing both, he hoped to narrow the gap on the World No. 1.

However, underwhelming performances derailed the 20-year-old’s goals. The Spaniard was defeated in the quarterfinals of the China Open, an ATP 500 tournament, by eventual champion Jannik Sinner. He subsequently fell short in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters against an inspired Grigor Dimitrov.

Alcaraz, who is now ranked second in the world with 8,805 points, was supposed to compete in the Swiss Indoors ATP 500 tournament, but a foot ailment caused him to withdraw.

“Unfortunately, I will be unable to participate in Basel this year!” I have a plantar fascia problem in my left foot and muscular tiredness in my lower back that needs to be treated so I can play the remainder of the season. I hope to see everyone soon!” Carlos Alcaraz used social media to express himself.

The injury has also called into question the youngster’s participation in the Paris Derby, the season’s last ATP 1000 Masters tournament, jeopardizing his quest for the World No. 1 status.
