Carlos Alcaraz commits to participate in revived Hopman Cup tournament
The Hopman Cup, a mixed-gender team event, is set to return to the tennis calendar in June after a four-year absence, with world number two Carlos Alcaraz leading the Spain team. The 19-year-old will partner with Paula Badosa in the event, which will also feature teams from France and Switzerland, with three more nations yet to be confirmed. The competition will take place at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club from July 19 to July 23.
Event details and format:
The Hopman Cup will see six nations competing in the 2023 and 2024 editions, with an expansion to eight nations from 2025. Teams will consist of one male and one female player, and ties will feature a men’s singles match, a women’s singles, and mixed doubles. The last edition of the event, named after Australian great Harry Hopman, was held in 2019 and saw Switzerland lift the trophy with Roger Federer as their lead player.
Alcaraz’s participation is a boost for the ITF:
Carlos Alcaraz’s participation in the event is a boost for the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which lost the Hopman Cup’s spot ahead of the Australian Open in 2020 due to the short-lived ATP Cup men’s team competition. According to ITF President David Haggerty, the Hopman Cup is another event that gives players the opportunity to represent their countries and compete for something bigger than themselves. He also expressed his delight at the return of the event to the tennis calendar after a brief hiatus since 2019.
The future of the Hopman Cup:
The Hopman Cup has a rival in the United Cup, a mixed-gender team event featuring 18 nations playing matches across three Australian cities, taking place before this year’s Australian Open. With the relaunch of the Hopman Cup and its five-year contract with Barcelona-based company Tennium, which operates multiple ATP and WTA tournaments, it will be interesting to see how it competes with the United Cup and its future in the tennis world.
The return of the Hopman Cup is exciting news for tennis fans around the world, especially with the participation of rising star Carlos Alcaraz. With its unique mixed-gender team format and the opportunity for players to represent their countries, the event is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. It remains to be seen how the Hopman Cup will fare against the United Cup and what the future holds for the event in the years to come.
