Candace Parker becomes the first woman of color to commentate on NBA ASG
NBA All-Star game invites Candace Parker to commentate
Candace Parker is known for setting milestones and breaking barriers ever since she began playing basketball.
The two-time WNBA champion will be on the sidelines commentating during the NBA all-star game. She is set to be accompanied by Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green. Parker will be the first woman of color to grace this role for the mid-season encounter.
Over the last few seasons, Candace has been a consistent figure on both TNT and NBA TV. It was in 2018 when she first appeared on a broadcast and understood the importance of being placed in such a role.
How did Parker react to this opportunity?
While talking to Sports Illustrated, Parker said, “It’s a huge honor to be able to do that and hopefully to inspire others to take that step, and understand that it’s beneficial to have a diversity of thought and diversity of people that are covering games.”
The two-time WNBA MVP has been a fan of the sport since childhood and spoke about how she witnessed the Chicago Bulls’ glory days of the 1990s.
She continued, “I’m a fan first and foremost of the NBA and especially the All-Star Game. And so I think the fan of the game and the childhood Candace is—I have to pinch myself to believe that I’m doing it and that I’m able to have a courtside seat to see the best players in the world.”
The NBA all-star game is scheduled to be played in Salt Lake City on February 19.
