Cameron Smith, the 2022 Australian PGA Championship winner, had a less-than-favourable showing in 2023 when he fell out before making the cut. He fought back tears after shooting a seven-over-par 78 in the second round. His rage was visible, however, as he banged his clubs on his golf bag in disgust.

After the first two rounds, he finished 9 over par, tied for the second last spot, and failed to make the cut. Unable to control his rage, he took it out on his adjacent golf equipment. Cameron Smith told Golf Magic about his poor performance:

“Yeah, no words, sh*t.”

He went on to say:

“I have no reason to perform like that because Australia has been so good to me.” Unacceptable. I’ve previously performed under duress, and it’s not acceptable, if not downright awful. I know what I’m doing; it’s just getting out there and committing to something that’s difficult.”

Smith won the Australian PGA Championship for the first time in 2017 and successfully defended it the following year. He wanted to defend his championship in 2023 after winning it again in 2022, but he still needs to.

Cameron Smith discusses the underwhelming 2023 Australian PGA Championship.

After a disappointing performance in the Australian PGA Championship, Cameron Smith will attempt to rebound at the upcoming Australian Open. According to Golf Magic, he stated:

“I hope I can get it together for next week and put on a better show than that.”

Cameron Smith will also strive to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, which he must accomplish by earning a country quota. However, in order to receive a country quota, he must retain his global position. Because the LIV Golf series does not earn OWGR points, he is gradually falling down the leaderboard and risks losing his berth.

“I’d like to be there 100 per cent, mate.” I know the criteria, but I’m not sure if that can change. Still, I’ve got these two events here [the Australian PGA and the Australian Open, both of which are co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and thus receive world ranking points] and probably more looks in the [2024] Majors, so hopefully, I can keep that ranking up and wear the (Australian national) coat of arms on the chest again, it’s pretty special.”

Smith will compete in the Asian Tour and the LIV Golf series in 2024 to keep his OWGR Points.
