Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick, beat out Kyle Trask for the starting job. He’ll get to showcase his skills on Sept. 10 against the Vikings.
Now that the legendary NFL player Tom Brady is no longer playing in the NFL, Mayfield will be responsible for taking his position and making good of his skills to bring the team to victory.
“I respect (Brady) completely, but I’m not going to ever try and be him,” Mayfield told reporters two weeks ago. “I’m not built like him. I don’t play like him. So just, yeah, try to be the best version of myself.”
If Mayfield manages to make a big comeback with Tampa, people will remember his contract as one of the best deals in the NFL. The Buccaneers gave him a contract for just one year, and it could be worth as much as $8.5 million.
