Alabama’s former quarterback Bryce Young, who is considered to be one of the top draft prospects for the quarterback position, has caused quite a stir by skipping an important aspect of his pro day. As reported by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Young chose not to weigh in before his throwing session.

Young had measured in at 5-foot-10 1/8 and 204 pounds at the combine earlier this month, according to Eric Edholm of the NFL’s website. Interestingly, back in February, it was reported that he was working hard to gain weight so that he could reach at least 200 pounds before the combine. This raised concerns about his size, which has been a major issue surrounding his draft status even before he played his last college game.

In fact, Sports Reference listed Young as 6-foot-0 and 194 pounds while he was playing for Alabama, but many believe those numbers were quite generous. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay even admitted that he would be “scared to death of drafting” Young due to his size, despite considering him a smaller version of Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar Patrick Mahomes.

Florio also pointed out the injury concerns surrounding Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has suffered multiple concussions since his college days. Despite this, Miami picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, guaranteeing him roughly $23.2M for 2024. Tagovailoa is listed as 6-foot-1 and 217 pounds on the NFL website.

As of Thursday afternoon, Young was listed as the second favorite to be the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, with OddsChecker giving him +350 odds. The betting favorite was C.J. Stroud of the Ohio State Buckeyes at -250. In a mock draft updated on Tuesday, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. had Stroud going to the Carolina Panthers with the first-overall pick, while predicting that the Houston Texans would take Young with selection No. 2.

Florio also noted that whatever Young currently weighs, he seems to be worried that it might hurt his final draft position. It remains to be seen whether his decision to skip the weigh-in will have any impact on his draft stock.
