Breanna Stewart lowered her salary to join the Liberty
Stewart happily agreed on a lower salary to play for the Liberty
The New York Liberty is set to kick off the season after being satisfied with their new signings. With Sabrina Ionescu and Laney already in their camp, Liberty was looking good to go. However, they have been able to sign Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot from the free agency and traded in Jonquel Jones. With such additions, Liberty looks like a force to reckon with.
There had been rumors of investigation going on alleging Liberty of making deals under the table. However, Stewart has now revealed that she had to give up on a big part of her salary in being able to sign for New York. The former Seattle Storm player was earning the maximum salary allowed for being one of the faces of the league.
What did Stewart have to say?
As per Myles Ehrlich of Windsor, Stewart has made it clear that her focus is on winning and went on to express her dissatisfaction over the league having a limited salary cap.
She said, “I’m not worried about setting a precedent,” Breanna Stewart said. “What we’re setting a precedent for is wanting to win and play with great players. It’s not my decision that the W has such a hard salary cap, but that’s a discussion for the next CBA.”
Stewart did not shy away from demanding improved conditions for WNBA players. She has been vocal about providing charter flights for teams. She has been doing everything in her power to make the league better. Despite that, she will be excited to begin a new chapter in her career with Liberty and possibly win numerous titles.
With all the signings, Liberty has formed a super team and so has the Las Vegas Aces who added Candace Parker. These two will be competing for the championship this season.
