Bill Russell Bio

Russell was born on February 12, 1934, in West Monroe, Louisiana. His father was a hardworking man who initially worked in a paper factory as a janitor, a stereotypical “Negro Job” that was both low-paying and intellectually challenging.

His father was a real hero, as he changed many jobs only for the survival of the family. But when it came to both of his parents, Russell was more attached to his mother, Katie. But accidentally, his mother passed away when he was 12 years old.

As a basketball player, Russell also struggled to develop his skills. Many times, it happened that he was not selected by any team. But despite this, he kept practicing and improving his performance day by day.

College Career

Russell was always ignored by the recruiters and never received any offers from any one of them. Until University of San Francisco recruiter Hal DeJulio saw him play in a high school game.

Russell was the new starting center, according to coach Phil Woolpert for the San Francisco Dons. Besides basketball, Russell participated in USF track and field events. He was ranked the 7th best high jumper in the world in 1956.

Post-Playing Career

In the year 1971, Russell joined the NBA on ABC to comment on the “Game of the Week.”

Russell is one of the most successful and famous athletes in North American sports history.

Russell became a vegetarian, took up golf, and worked as a color commentator for CBS and TBS throughout the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, but he was uncomfortable as a broadcaster.
