Big 12 Conference Set for Major Expansion: Plans to Add 1 or 3 Schools After Colorado Addition
The Big 12 Conference is all set to undergo a significant expansion beyond just bringing in Colorado. Reports indicate that they are planning to add one to three more schools in 2024, aiming to attract teams from the Pac-12 first.
According to Brett McMurphy from The Action Network, the Big 12’s expansion plans go beyond welcoming Colorado as its 13th member next year. They want to balance the numbers by getting more teams from the Pac-12 to join their ranks.
If the Pac-12 recruitment falls through, the conference has a backup plan. They will consider adding one more team from the Group of Five schools. Potential candidates for this spot include UConn, Memphis, San Diego State, and UNLV.

With Colorado on board, the Big 12 could end up with either 14 or 16 teams by the time the expansion is complete.
However, there are challenges ahead for the conference. After losing powerhouse teams like Oklahoma and Texas, the Big 12 faces the task of maintaining viewership and interest. The departure of these prominent teams could result in some growing pains for the post-Oklahoma and post-Texas Big 12 Conference.
Nonetheless, the Big 12’s ambitious expansion plans promise to reshape college sports and open up exciting possibilities for the future.
