In 2011, Bhanuka became the 4th individual to be awarded the ‘Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year’ twice in the country’s premier school sector awarding ceremony, the ‘Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year’.
Bhanuka has also been adjudged the ‘Young Emerging Player’ of the Under-19 Category at the CEAT Sri Lanka Cricket Awards 2011.
In 2019, against Pakistan, in the 2nd match of the series, Bhanuka scored a title-winning 77* off 48 balls and was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s Controversies:

Bhanuka Rajapaksa expressed his disappointment after he was left out of the West Indies Tour and England Tour in 2021, he stated that he was dropped out because of his fitness standards. He gave a YouTube interview where he heavily showed his criticism towards the Sri Lankan Selectors and the Authorities for not selecting him. In response to his criticism, the head coach of Sri Lankan cricket Mickey Arthur denied the allegation and stated that “Rajapaksa is a comfort zone cricketer” on the field and even he’s failed to pass the skin fold tests to play the international match.

In July 2021, he was given a suspended ban from all forms of cricket for one year by the Sri Lanka Cricket for breach of contract and for not gaining the required permission to give media interviews.
