Matthaus wants Neuer to be removed from the captain’s role

Manuel Neuer has been in front of the goal for Bayern for 12 years now. Given his history at the club, he is always one to look for the captain’s armband. However, the German shot-stopper has been the center of controversy since he left an uninformed trip and got injured while skiing. The 36-year-old is now out with a broken leg w hich had forced the club to find a replacement.

Despite being criticized for his unprofessional behavior, Neuer has now bashed the club for firing his best friend and Bayern’s goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic. 

WHAT THEY SAID:

Former Bayern Munich player, Matthaus is one of many who felt that Neuer’s antics left the club in a vulnerable state ahead of the remaining half of the season.

In an interview with Sky Deutschland, the German legend said, “Manuel Neuer is no longer acceptable as Bayern captain! He skied negligently and is now giving an unauthorized interview in which, he vehemently attacks the club. Hadn’t he said a few weeks ago that no one was above the club? And now this.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE:

Matthaus was quick to react to Neuer’s comments regarding Tapalovic’s sacking, “felt like my heart was being ripped out. It was the most brutal thing I’ve experienced in my career.”

To which Matthaus said: “What bothered me a lot about Manuel’s interview is the exaggerated choice of words. His heart was torn out. With all understanding: no one died, no child is seriously ill, it is the separation of an employee to whom he was very close.”

WHAT NEXT?

During his 12-year-long career at Bayern, Neuer made 489 appearances for the Bavarian club. During this time, the German contributed to winning Bayern 10 straight Bundesliga titles and two Champions League titles. As of now, he is on a deal that runs until the summer of 2024.
