Barcelona missed out on signing Julian Araujo by 18 seconds
Julian Araujo’s move to Barcelona fell off by 18 seconds
It was the Mexican right-back Julian Araujo, who came close to signing for FC Barcelona late on deadline day. All the fuss is because the club was technically 18 seconds late.
Director of football at FC Barcelona, Mateu Alemany said that it was a “system error” that caused the club to miss the midnight deadline and the opportunity the sign the player on Tuesday
However, Alemany has revealed that the club is ready to take this issue to FIFA to see if a solution can be found.
Who is Julian Araujo?
Araujo is 22, playing in Major League Soccer for LA Galaxy. He is a young Mexican right full-back and is expected to have good potential.
If brought to Barcelona, Araujo would have been placed into the reserve team initially. The right-back would have flourished in the third division for Barca B.
Barcelona is still recovering from the financial mess they were in. Considering the fact that the Blaugrana have to stay within their salary limit as prescribed by LaLiga, they did not make any new signings. However, the club instead let go of players like Depay and Hector Bellerin in order to register the Golden Boy Gavi into the first team.
The key point of difference was Gerard Pique who retired mid-way into the season and forgo his wages. The Catalan’s departure saved up to €50m in wages alone.
As we quote Mateu Alemany, “The three departures brought us significant economic savings.”
