Barcelona Femení create a new record
Over the last 5 years, Barcelona Femini has been one of the most dominant football teams across Europe. Thus, it should not come as a surprise that they have created another astonishing record. Barcelona Femení has created a winning streak of 50 league matches, the first team to do so.
The Catalan women achieved this feat on Wednesday as they got past Levante Las Planas in a 7-0 battering at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. Apart from the winning streak, the team hasn’t lost a home game since 2019.
It was Oshoala who netted a hat trick and Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic with a brace to her name. Apart from those two, Vicky Lopez and Mariona Caldentey got a goal each in the second half.
This winning streak began back in June 2021 when the Blaugrana lost 4-3 against Atletico Madrid. Since then, the team has averaged nearly 5 goals a game. They have scored a total of 247 goals and conceded a mere 19.
This season as well, Barca has gone undefeated in the league under the guidance of Jonatan Giráldez. They currently sit on top of the league standings with a four-point difference and two games in hand. Their only loss was against Bayern Munich in an away group fixture in the Champions League.
Is it pure talent or the love from the fans?
There is no doubt about the team’s quality. However, it’s the massive support coming from the Culers that the stadium almost always filled.
Earlier in March 2022, the club set another great record. During an El Clasico fixture in the Champions League Quarterfinals, Camp Nou was packed with as many as 91553 spectators. This was the largest crowd in the history of women’s football. The Catalans won the match with a 5-2 scoreline.
FC Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati was seen clicking selfies with the fans after their victory over Real Madrid.
RFEF Dispute
The club is currently involved in a dispute with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The issue is regarding a player that Barca fielded during their Copa de la Reina match, a player who has been termed ineligible.
Although the club has appealed the decision, they might still get disqualified from the competition.
“FC Barcelona announces that the Club is to continue to fight for the Women’s team’s rights after they were sanctioned by the Competition Committee for fielding an ineligible line-up, with an appeal to be presented in due course,” the club said in a statement.
“Should the sanction not be revoked on appeal, FC Barcelona will take every possible action, as it is considered that the line-up ended up being deemed ineligible due to technicalities in this case.”
