Sergio Busquets injury status revealed

La Liga leader FC Barcelona now faces the reality of getting into another tough round of fixtures, but this time without their captain Sergio Busquets on the pitch.

The veteran midfielder was forced off the field in the early minutes of the match against Sevilla. Barcelona still managed to win the match with a convincing 3-0 win, however, later it was revealed that Busquets had suffered a serious ankle injury. 

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE CLUB

On Monday, the club released a statement that revealed the extent of the injury. Unfortunately, things don’t look good for the player and the club.

The statement read, “Tests on Monday morning have revealed that first-team captain Sergio Busquets has sprained the external lateral ligament of his left ankle. He will be unavailable for selection until he recovers.”

IMPORTANCE OF BUSQUETS

It has been made clear that the Spanish midfielder is set to miss at least 3 weeks of action. This keeps him out for the games against Villareal and Cadiz in the league and Manchester United in the Europa League.

It is a big loss for Barcelona. Sergio, despite his age, plays a key role in Xavi’s plan. He has featured in 18 of the 20 league games played this season totaling over 1300 minutes. 

In La Liga, there is no other player in Barcelona’s squad who has made more combined tackles and interceptions (54). The Spaniard who has 143 caps for Spain, is among the top-3 when it comes to passes completed, ariel duels won, recoveries, and clearances.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Despite their captain being taken off the field early, Barca was able to dominate the match. Barça However, the next set of fixtures is going to be tricky. The Catalans will enter a busy couple of months as they face Manchester United in a double encounter in the Europa League. This will be followed by a double-legged Copa Del Rey clash against Real Madrid. Xavi will ask his players to be critical and decisive.
