Baker Mayfield’s Performance Raises Questions, Opening Door for Kyle Trask

The quarterback competition at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp has taken an interesting turn. While Baker Mayfield initially seemed like the top choice for the starting position, his recent struggles have given Kyle Trask a chance to shine.

According to reports from Greg Auman at FOX Sports, Baker Mayfield has been facing challenges in practice. He’s thrown eight interceptions during both 11-on-11 and seven-on-seven drills. In contrast, Kyle Trask has only thrown one interception, making his performance stand out.

It’s important to note that Greg Auman appears to be one of the few closely tracking training camp interceptions. Still, this information has now become widely known.

Looking back, Baker Mayfield faced issues with interceptions during his time with the Carolina Panthers, which led to his release. However, when he joined the Los Angeles Rams, things improved significantly. He only threw two interceptions across five games and even managed a comeback win shortly after joining the team.

Kyle Trask’s experience is quite limited, with only nine passes thrown over two NFL seasons. He’s aware of the importance of minimizing mistakes, particularly interceptions. In his words, “I’ve definitely been seeing what I can and can’t do for the past two years (in practices). I think I have a much better idea now. I know what situations you have to take more risks in, and I think if we can just play clean as an offense, that’s going to give us the best chance to win in the end. I’m just trying to do the best that I can do, which includes protecting the football.”

While Mayfield’s interceptions might not necessarily cost him the starting position, they have certainly intensified the competition.

As of now, the Buccaneers haven’t officially named their starting quarterback. Both Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are listed as part of the first team in the depth chart. Mayfield will be starting in the upcoming preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by Trask, who will take the lead in the following game against the New York Jets on August 19th.
