Andy Murray blasts Nike for sending a sexist message of congratulations to South Africa’s men’s team on their fourth Rugby World Cup victory

Andy Murray recently brought up an apparent Nike error when congratulating South Africa on their fourth Rugby World Cup victory.

South Africa’s men’s rugby side defeated New Zealand in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final on Sunday (October 29), winning by a narrow 12-11 margin. Nike, their gear sponsors, congratulated them on their triumph and declared them the “first” rugby side in history to win the championship four times.

“When we believe as one, it brings victory for all. Congratulations @springboks, the new World Champions and the first rugby team in history to do it four times. A big win and an even bigger victory for every South African,” Nike wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Fans on social media, however, questioned their congratulations post. One person remarked that Nike was wrong because New Zealand had won the women’s Rugby World Cup a record six times.

In their response to Nike, the fan in question also tagged Andy Murray, a well-known supporter of women in sports. They stated:

“@BlackFerns have done it six times! Representation matters, words matter! Just ask @andy_murray who has consistently challenged journalists on facts ascribed to male players as having ‘the best’ record, when women eg @serenawilliams were top! #CantBeWhatYouCantSee,” they wrote.

The former world number one then slammed Nike for their evident sexism.

“You’re correct. “It’s pathetic that the world’s largest sports clothing brand still does this,” he commented, accompanied by a thumbs-down emoji.

The women’s rugby squad of New Zealand has won the World Cup six times: in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2017, and 2021.
