Andre Onana, devastated by Manchester United’s setback at Bayern Munich, accepts responsibility.
Andre Onana, devastated by his costly error at the opening of Manchester United’s Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, believes he let the squad down.
Erik ten Hag’s side lost for the fourth time in five games, as a promising start in Bavaria was ruined by the summer signing allowing a Leroy Sane shot to creep in.
Bayern immediately scored a second via Serge Gnabry and never looked back, with Harry Kane netting a penalty after Rasmus Hojlund had brought one back after half-time.
Casemiro scored either side of Mathys Tel’s stoppage-time goal in a frantic finish to a 4-3 defeat that gloomy Onana accepted responsibility for.
“It’s difficult,” stated the Cameroonian international.
“It’s difficult to lose this way because I believe we started very well and lost control of the game after my mistake.”
“It’s a difficult situation for us, especially for me because I let the team down.” But the squad was extremely excellent, but we didn’t win the game because of me.
“I am pleased with the team’s efforts, and we must now move on.” This is goalkeeper life, and if we don’t win tonight, it’s all my fault.”
Onana sought to speak with the media after the game and was visibly upset about his first-half blunder, which he called “the key point” in the loss.
“I have to learn from it, be strong, and move on,” said the former Inter Milan star to TNT Sports.
“It’s not easy, but I’m very happy for the team’s comeback.” We fought till the end, but I must admit that we lost because of me.
“I have a lot to prove because, to be honest, my start in Manchester hasn’t gone as planned.”
“The way I play today is one of my worst games, and it’s difficult because we have high expectations, we’re a big club, and we want to win everything.”
“It was a huge opportunity for us to recover from our situation.” It’s a difficult moment. We must stick together, keep doing what we’re doing, and learn from our failures because it’s the only thing we can do.”
Ten Hag did not mince words when asked about Onana’s blunder during the news conference, emphasizing that it is about the team rather than an individual.
“I think he shows that he takes responsibility and has the personality that he needs to get to high levels,” United manager Jose Mourinho said.
“But it’s not just about him; it’s about the team’s performance, so we have to support him not only on the field but also in life.”
“However, it does not only apply to Andre but to all the players on the field.” They must realize they are in the same boat and must be on the same page to achieve outcomes.”
Ten Hag believes people should “not make it bigger than it is” and that Onana will recover from the blunder before Saturday’s Premier League trip to Burnley.
“When you score three goals in Munich, you have to take at least a point, which we didn’t,” added the Dutchman. “We need to look in the mirror at ourselves.”
Bayern were far from their free-flowing best, but Thomas Tuchel, barred from the field, was pleased with the outcome.
“It is a well-deserved win,” the ex-Chelsea manager stated. “Every victory in the Champions League is significant.”
“Every victory over Manchester United is significant.” We didn’t get into a rhythm, and in the period after we made it 3-1, we might have ended the game. But we handled every setback admirably.”
