All-Star Infielder Jed Lowrie Retires from MLB
It’s the end of an era for Jed Lowrie, the veteran infielder who has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after 14 seasons in the majors. Lowrie spent most of his career playing for the Oakland Athletics, earning an All-Star nomination in 2018 as a member of the franchise.
Reflecting on his time with the A’s, Lowrie said, “We always outperformed what our payroll was and exceeded expectations, and I was always drawn to that, and that’s why I always ended up going back.” He went on to praise the organization for giving him the freedom to be himself, and credited manager Bob Melvin for knowing just what to say and when to say it.
Lowrie’s baseball journey began in 2008 with the Boston Red Sox, before he joined the Houston Astros in 2012. He then had three separate stints with the A’s, playing for the team in 2013, 2016, and 2021. Lowrie also played for the Astros twice and the New York Mets once, but it was the A’s that held a special place in his heart.
As for his decision to retire, Lowrie said, “There’s a lot I’ve missed, doing this all of their lives. And nobody gets to play forever, right? I’ve just gotten to the point where I listen to my body, and when I think about playing another 162, I don’t want to do that.” While it’s sad to see him go, there’s no denying that Lowrie had a long and successful career in baseball, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
