All-Star Game 2023 Starters: LeBron and Antetokounmpo declared captains
LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been officially declared the captains of the 2023 NBA All-Star game. James has become captain for the sixth time and Antetokounmpo for the third time.
LeBron and Antetokounmpo garnered the most votes. James has joined the Western Conference and the starters are Zion Williamson, Steph Curry, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic. Antetokounmpo is in the Eastern Conference, with the starters Kevin Durant, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, and Kyrie Irving. Durant was expected to gather the most votes and become the captain but he is going through an MCL sprain.
The votes for the starters came from 50% of the fans and 25% from media and players.
The All-Star reserves will be announced by the NBA on Feb. 05 by the coaches of both teams.
Starters and their All-Star appearance
Last season, LeBron chose Luka Doncic, Steph Curry, and Nikola Jokic to be on his team. Even Antetokounmpo was in his squad. LeBron will make his appearance as the captain of the team for the sixth time. It is interesting to note that:
It will be Doncic’s fourth appearance in the All-Star game. He is the leading scorer and averaged 33.8 points, 1.5 steals, 9.1 rebounds, and 8.6 assists per contest.
Jokic will be making his fifth appearance. He is averaging 25.1 points, 9.9 assists, and 11 rebounds per game.
Steph Curry, an MVP candidate, will make his ninth appearance. He is averaging 29.3 points, 6.2 assists, 6.2 rebounds, and 1 steal per game.
As for Williamson, this will be his second All-Star game after he averaged 26 points, 4.6 assists, and 7 rebounds per game.
