Alex de Minaur annoyed by reporters focusing on Jannik Sinner during Davis Cup press conference
During a press conference following Australia’s match against the Czech Republic in the 2023 Davis Cup Finals, Alex de Minaur was irritated by a reporter asking him questions about Jannik Sinner.
On November 23, the Australian team overcame the Czechs in the team competition quarterfinals. De Minaur was critical to Australia’s triumph. He fought back from a set down to beat Jiri Lehecka 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 in the second singles encounter after Jordan Thompson lost the first 6-4, 7-5 against Tomas Machac.
The doubles team of Matt Ebden and Max Purcell then continued their extraordinary run, winning the decider matches 6-4 and 7-5 against Jiri Lehecka and Adam Pavlasek, advancing Australia to the semifinals.
Following his achievements, Alex de Minaur appeared at a news conference and was asked to remark on World No. 4 Jannik Sinner’s outstanding form recently, particularly at the ATP Finals.
During a Davis Cup news conference, the Australian said that he was irritated by queries about Sinner. He did, however, admit his close bond with the Italian.
“I mean, I feel like every time I talk to you, you ask me about Jannik, and look, I really like Jannik. I think he’s a great guy. I’ve got a lot of time for him, and I really enjoy playing doubles with him,” De Minaur said.
“I am overjoyed for his achievement. He’s a tremendous athlete, and I’m sure he has a lot more to accomplish in his career. But I’m present. Team Australia is here. We’re going to speak about the doubles. So that’s what I’ll do,” he continued.
Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur met in the Canadian Open final earlier this season, with the former taking home the prize. They were also supposed to face in the second round of the Paris Masters, but the 22-year-old backed out owing to health concerns.
