After coming off the bench to score twice in extra time to help Manchester United pull off a thrilling victory, Scott McTominay discusses his emotions
On October 7, Manchester United defeated Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford thanks to a game-winning goal from midfielder Scott McTominay, who came off the bench. Following his stunning hat trick at Old Trafford, the Scottish midfielder expressed his feelings.
When Mathias Jensen scored for Brentford in the 26th minute, it appeared as though Manchester United would suffer its fourth consecutive Old Trafford loss. Erik ten Hag, the manager of the Red Devils, had run out of alternatives with three minutes remaining and resorted to McTominay to give a stronger presence in the box.
After Nathan Collins’ mishandled clearance, the Manchester United academy alumnus took just six minutes to bring his team even. Four minutes later, McTominay blasted home a header inside the post after receiving a flick-on from Harry Maguire.
After making a significant contribution to what turned out to be the Red Devils’ turning moment, Scott McTominay fronted the media to express his views. The 26-year-old said that this was among his most memorable professional experiences to date.
Through The European Lad, he stated:
“That was probably one of my favorite moments ever on a football pitch.”
Despite a generally sluggish performance at home against Brentford, Manchester United avoided suffering its first home loss since 1937. They will be hoping that this victory will give them the boost they need for a better stretch of form.
Before being replaced, McTominay received instructions from the manager, which he confirmed when asked about. He was told to score a goal. This summer, the much-maligned midfielder was placed on the market, and West Ham United and Newcastle United both expressed interest.
He controlled a botched clearing for his first goal with poise and outstanding shooting skill, volleying it past Thomas Strakosha. For the second goal, he displayed his predatory instinct by slipping into the middle of the box to head in Maguire’s flick-on.
With four league victories under their belt after eight games, Manchester United has moved up to the tenth spot in the rankings with 12 points. They will feel a bit more upbeat going into the international break before facing struggling Sheffield United when they return to play.
After the victory, Erik ten Hag will be happy with the outcome, if not the performance. He will be hoping that his team builds on the triumph and recovers from a rocky start to the year.
