AEW Interested in Buying WWE and Merging Two Wrestling Companies – Reports
Sources claim that World Wrestling Entertainment is interested in joining up with AEW, the professional wrestling company owned by the Khan family (All Elite Wrestling).
Rumors started from Vince’s return to WWE
With the proclamation that Vince McMahon would be returning to WWE as the Executive Chairman and planning to sell the company as 2023 came closer, WWE soon made headlines.
Wednesday morning reports asserted that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has bought the American professional wrestling organization WWE.
Reports on Wednesday morning stated that the American professional wrestling promotion WWE is being sold to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
In addition to Vince’s plans to sell WWE, Nick Khan is the sole WWE CEO, working along with Vince after Stephanie resigned from her position as chairwoman and co-CEO.
CNBC published a new article on Thursday with the headline “WWE’s smaller rival AEW interested in a merger, sources say.”
The story did note that Vince McMahon’s interest in combining the two brands is a “long shot,” and it also said that AEW has not spoken with either McMahon or WWE President Nick Khan.
This is in response to an earlier Barrons story that AEW (the Khans) is “in the pool of potential
purchasers” for WWE.
The article also stated that: “The Khans, who also own the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars and the Premier League’s Fulham F.C., could partner with a strategic media company to share the intellectual property while merging the wrestling leagues, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private. AEW has a TV carriage rights agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT and TBS.”
In addition to this, the report also adds that The Khans are “open to discussing a potential role for [Vince] McMahon” if WWE merges with AWE, even though it’s “unclear what type of job McMahon would want with WWE after a sale.”
According to a source close to the possible deal, Tony Khan and his family-run All Elite Wrestling, which is WWE’s main rival, are among WWE’s potential buyers. The Khans will probably seek out a financial partner to purchase the asset, the source added. Both the football franchise Jacksonville Jaguars and the English soccer team Fulham Football Club are already owned by Tony Khan’s father Shahid Khan, a co-owner of AEW, demonstrating the pair’s considerable financial resources.
